Schmelzer (1856-1945) was originally appointed to the Park Board in May 1901 to temporarily fill the term of J.V.C. Karnes who resigned in March 1901 following the election of new Mayor James A. Reed. Mr. Schmelzer was officially made a regular member of the Park Board at the end of May, along with the other new Park Board members at the end of May.Charles Schmelzer was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1856. His family moved to Leavenworth, Kansas in 1857 where his father started a sporting goods store. Charles became involved with the family business, as did other members of the family. The Schmelzer Arms Company moved to Kansas City in 1885. They had supplies for various sports, guns, fishing, horse training and racing, also toys and fireworks. They supplied the Kansas City Cowboy Baseball team with their uniforms in 1888. The company also sponsored shooting and racing tournaments. Charles was very involved with Commercial Club and its promotion of business in Kansas City. He was part of the Karnival Krewe for Priests of Pallas celebrations, a celebration set up to emulate the New Orleans’ Mardi Gras. He was also a director of the Union National Bank, a member of the Kansas City Athletic Club, various hunting and fishing clubs, and the Evanston Golf Club.The Schmelzer Arms Company encountered financial troubles in the late 1920s and was liquidated in 1928. #KCParks #FromTheArchives | KC Parks Instagram Photos
