Rufus was born in 1887 in the family home at 13th and Locust. His grandfather, also named Rufus Montgall, was an early settler in Jackson County, Missouri and had a farm south of 15th Street. The street of Montgall, which ran through the old Montgall farm, was named for the elder Rufus Montgall. The Rufus Montgall Playground was also located on part of the old Montgall farm.
