w{Throwback Thursday} #KCParks Columbus Square Park / Washington Square Park circa 1910It won’t be long until swimming pools, wading pools and spraygrounds will be opening for the summer season. This picture was taken at a wading pool and shelter house that no longer exist. Today the park is called Columbus Square Park, located at Holmes Street and Missouri Avenue. When the park was first created in 1909 it was called Washington Square Park, named for George Washington. It was built as a neighborhood park with a playground area. This wading pool was built in 1910 and the shelter in 1911. The pool was enlarged in 1920; it was torn out in 1958. The shelter was removed in 1925.In 1925 the park was renamed “Columbus Square” to honor Christopher Columbus. The City of Kansas City had obtained a large statue of George Washington on horseback and placed it in a small park east of Union Station at Pershing Road and Grand. They named that park “Washington Square Park”. Columbus Square has remained a popular neighborhood park and is presently undergoing renovations which should be completed by this summer. #TBT #kcparks125 | KC Parks Instagram Photos
