History
Dedicated in 1990, Garment District Place sits in the heart of Kansas City’s Garment District neighborhood. At its height in the middle of the 20th century, it’s estimated that one in four women’s coats worn in the United States was made in Kansas City. Garment District Place is actually located at the terminus of the famous 8th Street Tunnel, part of the former streetcar infrastructure that took garment workers to and from the District. The park features two public art installations, the 8th Street Fountain, dedicated in 1989, and the Garment District Sculpture, a giant threaded needle and button dedicated to the Garment District and the men and women who made the district famous.
