Join us for the unveiling of the David Mecklenburg Trailhead sign. On October 11, 2022, the Board of Commissioners voted to name a newly constructed Northland trailhead within Maplewoods Greenway after Commissioner Mecklenburg to honor and celebrate his many hours of tireless energy and exemplary service to the citizens of Kansas City.
In 2011 Mayor Sly James appointed David Mecklenburg to the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners, serving from 2011-2021. Commissioner Mecklenburg is the fifth longest serving Commissioner, out of 111 Commissioners, dating back to 1892. Commissioner Mecklenburg had a large influence on the park and boulevard system, working diligently for the city as a whole, constantly expressing his concern, that the Parks and Recreation Department provide the best in the Park and Recreation Services to the citizens of Kansas City. Commissioner Mecklenburg is a true advocate for trails and linear parks. Commissioner Mecklenburg is no longer serving in a capacity on the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners but continues to contribute to the economic and environmental wellbeing of our community and for the Parks and Recreation Department, by serving in various capacities on other boards and committees in our city. “Once a Commissioner, Always a Commissioner”.
