THE YEAR IN NUMBERS
Free Beginning
SWIMMING LESSONS
In May, KC Parks announced a goal of teaching 1,125 area youth to swim in 2017. By the end of
the summer, more than 1,300 kids had learned to swim, thanks to the new KC Parks free swim
lessons initiative.
The fi rst two skill levels of Learn-to-Swim lessons were off ered at no cost to youth at outdoor
water parks, major pools and indoors at Gregg/Klice, Southeast and Tony Aguirre Community
Center pools.
KC Parks’ intention in off ering free beginning lessons is to lower the possibility of water-related
incidents and to increase basic water safety knowledge. The safety of Kansas City’s children is
paramount to KC Parks, and water safety is of the utmost importance. The hugely successful
program will be repeated in 2018.
