Kansas City International Dragon Boat Festival Returns to Brush Creek June 21st

The much-anticipated Kansas City International Dragon Boat Festival will return on Saturday, June 21, 2025, from 10:00 AM to approximately 2:30 PM along Brush Creek at the Country Club Plaza. Since its launch in 2005, the festival has grown into a beloved summer tradition, celebrating the city’s cultural diversity and global connections.

Organized by The Society for Friendship with China, in partnership with the City of Kansas City, MO Parks & Recreation., the Kansas City Sister City Association, and many community supporters, the festival highlights Chinese and Asian culture, promotes people-to-people friendship, and fosters appreciation for multiculturalism.

This free, family-friendly event features three main components:

  • Dragon Boat Races — Teams from local schools, businesses, and organizations compete in this ancient sport that began over 2,000 years ago in China. For the first time, a high school team will join the competition.
  • Cultural Showcase Tents — Interactive booths highlight Chinese and other Asian traditions, art, and community organizations.
  • Stage Performances — A full lineup of cultural entertainment, including music, dance, and martial arts, will bring the spirit of Asia to the heart of Kansas City.

As the only U.S. city to host a dragon boat race on a creek, Kansas City offers a uniquely picturesque setting for the races. The event continues to shine a spotlight on Kansas City as an emerging international city and has also supported scholarships for students in both Kansas City and China.

Team sponsorships are available for $500, with proceeds supporting community cultural programs and student scholarships. The event is partially funded by the Neighborhood Tourism Development Fund (NTDF) of Kansas City.
