July is National Park and Recreation Month. Nearly 70% of all tennis in the United States is played on public courts, and 42% of tennis players use public parks as their primary playing location. Parks and recreation promotes health and wellness, encouraging physical activity by providing space for tennis and many other activities designed to promote active lifestyles.
This month make plans to visit the Plaza Tennis Center-an outdoor public tennis facility in Kansas City. Located on parkland and constructed in 1928, Plaza Tennis Center has served the Kansas City tennis community for generations.
Plaza Tennis Center—nestled next to Country Club Plaza, the Midwest’s oldest outdoor shopping and dining area—features 14 outdoor lighted tennis courts, two practice boards and a clubhouse. The exhibition court offers bleacher seating.
The United States Tennis Association Missouri Valley became operating manager of Plaza Tennis Center in 2024. The Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department invested in the facility by resurfacing every court in the spring of 2024.
Multiple studies identify tennis as the healthiest sport in the world, adding nearly 10 years to players’ lives when compared to the lives of sedentary individuals. Tennis’ popularity and retention has seen growth across the country. Most significantly, tennis has grown by more than 8 million players since 2019, an increase of more than 45%.
Tennis participation in the United States has surged to a new high of 25.7 million players following five consecutive years of growth, and what better way to find yourself in the game than through play opportunities at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City as part of National Park and Recreation Month this July!
