Dedicated: May 15, 2025
Description: The granite memorial pillars include names of children submitted by families and community members who died due to violence between 2001 and 2024. The unveiling date, May 15, marks what would have been the birthday of Erica Green—known to many as “Precious Doe”—whose tragic death sparked nationwide attention and community reflection.
Inscription: When the gift of life was taken from you, so was a piece of our heart. Your death will not be in vain. Those of us remaining must cherish the children and shield them from harm. This memorial remembers Erica Green (Precious Doe) and children of our area that have tragically lost their lives to violence since 2001.
Precious Doe Memorial
In 2009, two benches were placed in honor of a small child whose body was found across the street from the original Hibbs Park in a wooded area. The unidentified body was found in 2001 and her identity was unknown for four years. Kansas City embraced her and gave her the name “Precious Doe”. In 2005, she was identified as Erica Green and her mother and stepfather were charged with her murder. In 2008, her stepfather was convicted of first-degree murder and sent to prison. Her mother pleaded guilty and was also sent to prison. The memorial benches dedicated to Erica were placed on the original Hibbs Park property and reset in the plaza area of the Children’s Memorial in 2025.
