Blurring the lines between art and function, Michele Oka Doner’s fireplace and hearth, bronze fire screen and tools fill the Hillcrest Community Center with the warmth of home. Its title, River Jacks, refers to the native river stones used in the hearth’s construction. Known for her site-specific work, Doner combines her interests in natural history, archeology, and anthropology into a piece that, in her own words, “evokes the ancestral storage containers of early Missourians.”
