Northland Trailhead named after long-time KC Parks Commissioner
On May 5, current and former KC Parks leadership and Northland residents gathered to unveil a new trailhead sign on Happy Rock Trail within Maplewoods Greenway, 2001 NE Barry Road, named in honor of Commissioner David Mecklenburg. The 3-mile trail is one of most popular in Kansas City and offers a pleasant walk alongside the meanders of Shoal Creek passing through shaded and forested areas. The trail is stroller friendly and bike friendly.
ABOUT DAVID MECKLENBURG
The KC Parks Board of Commissioners voted on October 11, 2022, to name a newly constructed trailhead within Maplewoods Greenway the “David Mecklenburg Trailhead” to honor and celebrate his many hours of tireless energy and exemplary service to the citizens of Kansas City.
In 2011 Mayor Sly James appointed David Mecklenburg to the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners, serving from 2011-2021. Commissioner Mecklenburg is the fifth longest serving Commissioner, out of 111 Commissioners, dating back to 1892.
Commissioner Mecklenburg had a large influence on the park and boulevard system, working diligently for the city as a whole, constantly expressing his concern, that the Parks and Recreation Department provide the best in the Park and Recreation Services to the citizens of Kansas City. Commissioner Mecklenburg is a true advocate for trails and linear parks.
Commissioner Mecklenburg is no longer serving in a capacity on the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners but continues to contribute to the economic and environmental wellbeing of our community and for the Parks and Recreation Department, by serving in various capacities on other boards and committees in our city. “Once a Commissioner, Always a Commissioner”.
