The Wagon Master

The Wagon Master

Ward Parkway & Broadway St Kansas City, MO 64112

Artist/Designer: L.E. “Gus” Shafer

The Wagonmaster is a  larger-than-life size figure of a man attired in western clothing. He is sitting on a horse with a gun placed across the saddle. The man is pointing in a westerly direction. The sculpture sits on a very large limestone rock. There is a crack in the right rear hoof of the horse.  The artist used his own face as a model. At the base of the statue are button activated recordings that tell the story of the Wagon Master and the Battle of Westport.

God slumbers in the rock He breathes in the plant He dreams in the animal He awakens in man – An Indian Proverb.
